Spring 2022 One Room Challenge – Week 3, Stacked Tile ON THE FLOOR!

My tile arrived and I couldn’t be more excited to install it! I am partnering with The Tile Club and they gifted me this 4×12 black matte subway tile for the bathroom floor. I originally planned on installing 12×24 tiles, but when I saw the large format tile samples with the large pattern wallpaper, it didn’t look right. One basic principle of mixing patterns is to pair large patterns with small patterns, so I switched my plan for the floor tiles to a smaller format tile. Here are the tiles I considered:

The hexagons would have been a safe choice, but ultimately, I loved the rectangular lines of the subway tiles contrasted with the free flowing pattern of the wallpaper. The hard part, though, was that I couldn’t find any guidance or inspiration for stacked tiles on a floor! I finally found this inspo via Em Henderson (and a great blog post on stacked tile here!):

I wanted to install the tile in a stacked pattern just like in the inspiration above. We spent a significant amount last weekend laying out the pattern and finding the center line of the room to guide the installation.

As you can see from the photo above, we started in the back and laid tiles all the way to the front of the bathroom to see where the tiles would stop. See that small space left at the hallway door at the bottom of the photo? We want a full tile there instead of a partial tile because this is where you enter the space, so we measured the distance from that last tile to the doorway. That measurement became the partial tile piece that we started with at the very back of the room.

By “shifting” the tiles down and starting with the partial piece at the back of the bathroom, we will end with a full piece at this door. Visually, this will be appealing to see a full tile when you walk into the room and the partial tile piece at the back of the room will not be noticeable due to being mostly covered by the toilet.
We started tiling on Sunday and finished part of the toilet/shower area, but I’m glad we took the time to prepare and map out the space!

I set aside two weekends for the tiling so I’ll be back next week with a tile update and be sure to follow along for updates on Instagram.
